Healthcare access shouldn’t end when the appointment begins
Summary
Problem
People were delaying care because getting help was too hard: travel, waiting, scheduling conflicts, unclear costs, and no way to know whether a doctor was qualified. Most telemedicine products stop at the consultation, leaving prescriptions, records and medication as separate chores.
Solution
A mobile app structured around the full journey. Verified credentials and consultation fees appear before booking. After the consultation, prescriptions, records, medication delivery and reminders live in the same place, with the most important action always within reach.

Overview
MedViva is a telemedicine mobile app that connects people with licensed healthcare professionals anytime, anywhere. The concept goes beyond booking. It brings consultations, prescriptions, medical records, medication delivery and reminders into one connected experience. The goal was simple: make getting and managing care feel more accessible, trustworthy and less stressful.
The problem
For many users, the problem wasn’t finding a doctor. Getting care meant travelling to a hospital, waiting for hours, juggling schedules, paying uncertain fees, or disrupting a busy routine. For people in underserved areas or with mobility challenges, every one of those barriers was bigger.
So the opportunity was larger than putting a doctor on a screen. MedViva needed to reduce the friction between realising you need care and actually receiving it.
Research
After synthesising 3 user interviews and 37 survey responses, four recurring areas of friction emerged:
- Booking. Finding the right doctor, conflicting appointment times, unclear steps.
- Trust and pricing. Users wanted verified professionals, transparent fees and ratings before sharing medical information.
- Healthcare management. Prescriptions and records were hard to access, organise and keep over time.
- Medication discovery. Medical terminology, long lists and unclear search results made finding medication frustrating.
The design question shifted from “How do we help someone book a doctor?” to “How do we make the whole process of seeking and managing care feel easier, clearer and more reassuring?”
Users cared about three things when choosing care: who am I talking to, how much will it cost, and how difficult will this be. They also valued secure records and easier access. That made trust, clarity and accessibility central requirements rather than visual polish added later.
The survey reinforced the interviews. Many respondents had postponed hospital visits because of cost, distance and waiting times, and saw virtual consultations, digital prescriptions and medication delivery as ways to make care easier. Convenience wasn’t a preference. It decided whether people acted on their health at all.
Competitive analysis showed the gap. Most telemedicine products concentrated on the consultation. Few connected the tasks around it. That was MedViva’s opportunity: support the broader journey, from finding care to choosing a professional, consulting, receiving prescriptions, managing records, getting medication and staying on track.
Strategy
MedViva was structured around the full journey. Users can discover professionals, see doctor information and consultation costs, book, access records, manage prescriptions, arrange delivery, receive reminders and view health insights. The intention wasn’t completeness. Each part had to serve one goal: help users move through healthcare with less uncertainty and effort.
Design decisions
Trust appears before the decision
Healthcare is a high-trust experience, so credibility couldn’t hide behind screens. Doctor credentials and consultation fees are surfaced before booking. The information hierarchy answers three questions in order: who is this doctor, what does it cost, what can I do next.
Essential tasks within reach
The home screen connects the major parts of the journey without making the interface feel complex: upcoming appointment, notifications, health insights, services, and an emergency action. The principle was less searching, less uncertainty, more clarity. That matters most on mobile, where a user may already be stressed or dealing with something urgent.
Clarity when attention is scarce
Healthcare isn’t a place where people should have to work out how an interface works. The design prioritised critical information first, clear actions, simple navigation, strong hierarchy, reduced cognitive effort and early trust signals, so the interface feels reassuring rather than demanding.
Accessibility decisions
Because users may be unwell, anxious or on a small screen, the UI uses large tap targets for primary actions, plain-language labels instead of medical terminology in navigation and search, high-contrast status colours for appointments and prescriptions, and one primary action per screen. These are design decisions, not a compliance claim; a full accessibility audit would be the next step before release.
Testing
Usability testing used realistic tasks: find an affordable doctor, book a consultation, access medical records, order medication. Participants completed them efficiently and described the experience as simple, reassuring and easy to understand. Three changes came out of it: the consultation fee was made more prominent, a confirmation screen with next steps was added after booking, and the pharmacy moved into the main navigation.
Constraints and trade-offs
There was a temptation to make MedViva comprehensive. Healthcare products get overwhelming fast when every action competes for attention. The final direction prioritised accessibility and usability over feature breadth, focusing on the tasks users needed most. A simpler experience with fewer layers was worth more than a feature-heavy one that demanded effort.
Outcome and reflection
The design is projected to support more consultation bookings, better medication adherence through reminders, and earlier care-seeking. Those are projected outcomes, not measured business results; MedViva is a concept. The immediate validation was whether users could understand and navigate the experience with confidence, and in testing they could.
This project changed how I think about designing healthcare products. Connecting patients to doctors is one part of the problem. The experience also has to help people understand their options, trust the professional they choose, manage what happens after the consultation and reach the next step without friction. Trust creates confidence. Clarity reduces uncertainty. Convenience makes action easier.
